Our second and final spotlight is on one of our newest SRC team members, June Hill, BSN, RN, CNOR. Ms. Hill came on board a few months ago as Senior Manager, Clinical Quality and Compliance after working as a highly successful operating room nurse with more than 35 years of experience. Ms. Hill was the Director of Robotics at Bon Secours Mercy Health, one of the nation’s largest Catholic health care systems, where she led the organization in achieving SRC accreditation as a Center of Excellence in six practice areas. She is a nationally recognized speaker and clinical consultant for Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the da Vinci robotic surgical system. Ms. Hill has worked in a Level-1 trauma center and in areas including robotics, cardiac, bariatric, urology, gynecology, thoracic and general surgery.
What made you decide to become a nurse?
“I’ve always worked in a hospital, since volunteering as a “Candy Striper” in Girl Scouts as a teenager. I enjoyed talking with the patients in the hospital and helping out whenever I could. I trained as a Respiratory Therapist for about 5 years before going to LPN school which lead me to train as a scrub technician in the OR. After a few years, I went back to school to earn my Associates’s degree in nursing, then later for a BSN. ”
What did you find most rewarding?
“Working in the OR and watching/assisting surgeons. Whether it be cancer, broken bones, spinal deformities, heart surgery, (I could go on and on), it is rewarding to see those patients recover.”
What do you feel is/was your greatest skill as a nurse?
“Probably my dedication. I have always tried to have a good work ethic (I got that from my Dad) and have loved every aspect of my job. I would like to say my greatest skill is communication and hopefully, my coworkers would agree. Knowing how to handle stress is key to a good outcome. I’ve always tried to stay calm in urgent situations and go the extra mile when needed.”
How did you handle the stress?
“I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of support from family (especially my girls). My parents had a house at the beach, and I took the girls there a lot on the weekends. I read a lot and I also have a big network of friends that I travel with. Different times of my life offered different stress relievers.”
Tell me something fun about yourself, unrelated to nursing. What is your favorite thing to do during your free time?
“I LOVE to dance and I love to travel. My favorite place to visit is New Orleans. I usually go 3-4 times a year for music festivals and have such a good time. New Orleans is for all ages and I can dance like no one is watching. I can’t wait to go back!”
